The properties of matter (atoms, molecules, and condensed matter/plasma) are dramatically changed by the superstrong magnetic fields thought to exist on magnetars. A host of problems related to matter in strong magnetic fields must be solved before we can have complete confidence in our understanding of the surface layer of magnetars and in our ability to properly interpret current/future observations of neutron star surface radiation. These pose new challenges to theoretical astrophysicists, plasma physicists, atomic physicists and condensed matter physicists.
