Kes 73 is a young SNR at whose center lies the AXP 1E 1841-045. The SNR exhibits a shell-like morphology, but with distinct emission interior to the shell. The AXP has a pulsation period of 11.8 s, and a soft spectrum. Here we present a Chandra investigation of Kes 73 in which we perform spatially resolved spectral analysis in search of abundance variations and material enriched by elements synthesized in the progenitor star. We find that the plasma is highly underionized, with indications of enhanced Mg, Si, and S. The western limb shows higher absorption than other regions, but with similar plasma properties. We discuss these properties in the context of models for the progenitor star. The emission from 1E 1841-045 is well described by a model consisting of a blackbody and a power law spectrum, typical of other AXPs. Using continuous-clocking data, we detect the 11.8 s pulsations and investigate the spectrum as a function of phase. We contrast the lack of strong spectral variability with models for the emission from AXPs. This study is supported in part by NASA Contract NAS8-39073 and Chandra grant GO0-1118X.
