There are obvious disadvantages, but it turns out some surprising advantages, to running a small PhD program at an institution that is primarily undergraduate. Small size and limited resources necessitate a high level of efficiency if the program is to be effective in mentoring and preparing students for their post-PhD careers. Strategies devised to achieve these goals and their outcomes will be discussed.
