The properties of the thermodynamic potentials of systems with perfectly mobile components are considered in relation to the critical remarks of and (1964), as well as the possibilities of the application of the Gibbs phase rule in petrology. The phase rule is particularly meaningful when applied systematically to definite assemblages of rocks (and not merely to individual samples) since such a procedure excludes any accidental interrelation of parameters.
