The high value of the intensity ratio of the forbidden-line O I doublet, I-lambda(6364)/I-lambda(6300) is approximately equal to 1 (vs a nebular value of 0.30), in SN 1987A between days 100 and 200 is accounted for by the joint effect of self-absorption in O I forbidden lines and of Thomson scattering. Analysis of the evolution of the doublet ratio in SN 1987A yields an estimate of the ratio of the oxygen mass to its volume filling factor of about 15 solar masses. For an oxygen mass of 1.5 solar mass assumed by present-day pre-SN models, the filling factor is about 0.1. It is possible that the clumpiness of the oxygen distribution responsible for self-absorption causes the sawlike structure of the doublet profile as well. The similar value of the inverse doublet ratio in SN 1987A and in the other two supernovae of the IIP type, SN 1985P and SN 1990H, at a similar phase presupposes a similar structure of the inner parts of the envelopes of these three supernovae.
