The question of possible optical counterparts of gamma ray bursts from unique archival photographic plates is discussed. The photographic plates are evaluated under the reflected light microscopy, which is a valuable tool to detect plate defects. The analysis shows that two of the three objects found by Shaefer are plate defects, and serious doubts exist about the reality of the third. None of these three objects can be regarded as a candidate object for the optical counterpart of gamma ray bursts. There are still some possible candidates for possible optical counterparts of gamma ray bursts; however, it is still unproven that gamma ray bursts are accompanied by optical flashes.
