Natural radio sources and computer simulations are used by the Solar Terrestrial Energy Program (STEP) to study mechanisms of solar wind acceleration and the dynamics of transient interplanetary phenomena. An account is presently given of the activities of four Japanese research institutes, which are to be coordinated within STEP's Project 2. Middle and low latitude magnetospheric studies, as well as equator and high-latitude observations, are to be conducted.
