The features and scientific aims of SOFIA (Stratospheric Observatory For
Infrared Astronomy), a planned 2.5 m telescope to be installed in an
aircraft and operated at altitudes from 41,000 to 46,000 ft, are
discussed. A brief overview of the SOFIA program is given.
