Photometric observations of the BQ star HD 51585 from 1968 to 1988 are given. The star may be slightly variable. Spectral observations from 1987 show a temperature of about 30,000 K and emission lines for H, He I, and forbidden O III. The Balmer jump is seen in the emission. Comparison with earlier observations shows that the equivalent widths of hydrogen lines increase with time, apparently due to a decrease in the optical depth in the lines as a result of widening of the envelope. It is suggested that HD 51585 is a protoplanetary object in its final phase, in which the properties of the forming planetary nebula can already be seen.
