NICMOS, a second generation near-IR instrument for the HST, offers a new opportunity for the detection of planets and other substellar objects around nearby stars. Coronagraphic techniques exploit the lower scattered light at IR wavelengths to aid in detection. The reduction in scattered light is offset by the larger area of the Airy ring to produce a planetary signal-to-noise ratio similar to the optical region. Unique opportunities afforded by the absortion spectrum of giant gaseous planets and the IR luminosity of brown dwarfs are available at near-IR wavelengths. Several aspects of NICMOS such as pixel size, coronagraphic design and ultimate sensitivity are designed to utilize these advantages.
