The finite width 'jump' in the equilibrium surface density distribution
of the gaseous subsystem of a flat galaxy is studied. Emphasis is given
to the jump's influence on the parameters of spiral structure excited by
hydrodynamic instability. The results are compared with those of
numerical and analog experiments.
