Studies of the polarisation of light reflected from a range of carbon-dominated dust layers have been compared with the optical polarisation of sunlight reflected off the nucleus of Halley's Comet prior to perihelion passage. The measured polarisation curve from a highly roughened layer of soot is in good agreement with the data from Comet Halley. This indicates that the nucleus is covered by a thick dusty covering of low albedo. Reflectivity measurements on the soot sample indicate that the albedo of the cometary nucleus is 0.032.
