The significance of Mossman's (1989) survey of sunspots without the aid of a telescope is discussed in relation to ancient Chinese sunspot surveys. Mossman's results are compared with the sunspot record for the 1981-1982 period. It is found that the sunspot number must be at least R(z) = 50 before sunspots can be seen with the naked eye and that sunspots as small as 0.3 arcmin may be observed without a telescope. It is concluded that the ancient Chinese astronomers examined the sun infrequently and that either the size of the spots which they observed was much larger than the observation threshold or they did not record all of the sunspots which they observed.
