We request 8 nights with the CTIO 1-m telescope, in support of the CTIO Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) and Practicas de Investigacion en Astronomia (PIA) Programs. We propose to observe open star clusters in coordination with the WIYN Open Cluster Study in the southern hemisphere to determine fundamental properties (such as distance, age and metallicity) and reveal the variable star population. The program is designed to provide rich, hands-on experience with the CTIO research telescopes and provide valuable observational skills to the participants, continuing the long tradition of the observatory.
