Galactic Clusters, Statistical Correlation, Density Distribution, Velocity Distribution
Scientific paper
In a previous paper the authors presented a new method that makes it possible to infer the surface number density profile of galaxies in groups and clusters. This method is based on the correlation analysis of galaxy positions in a plate and applies to radially symmetric systems with uncorrelated positions of their particles. Here it is shown that, under these same assumptions, the method makes it possible to obtain the surface density profile of any additive positive property, as well as other related quantities, such as the line-of-sight velocity dispersion of galaxies. Moreover, the method can deal not only with structures that are radially symmetric but also with ones that are elliptically symmetric and axisymmetric. Finally, it is shown that the analogous method in one dimension makes it possible to obtain another important profile for the analysis of galaxy structures, namely, the line-of-sight velocity distribution.
