This paper briefly examines features of current British and Australian major ground-based large telescopes, and describes the operation of the Anglo-Australian Observatory (AAO) which is particularly relevant to the JNLT. Consideration is given to the instrumentation on the AAT and to future plans for large telescopes in Britain and Australia. The paper also describes scientific trends at the AAO and discusses the requirements for successful large telescopes.
