The UV emission at 2000 A of 28 late-type galaxies is used as a tracer of their recent star formation and compared to their atomic and molecular hydrogen content. A correction for dust extinction, based on the total gas content, has been performed. The aversge star formation rate per unit area shows a very good correlation with the average total gas surface density. A power-law relation with an exponent between 1 and 1.6 is derived between these quantities. Much weaker correlations are found between the average star formation rate per unit area and each gas phase alone, especially the molecular phase. It is concluded that the star formation activity of these late-type galaxies depends on their total gas content and not on a single, atomic or molecular, gas phase.
