Earth Atmosphere: Refraction

Scientific paper

Measuring the atmospheric refraction for sources at low altitude over the horizon is a difficult task, both from the theoretical and the experimental point of view. This paper shows that estimating the refraction by timing the instant of the sunset, though it is an easy way, it leads to very poor results. The average value of the refraction at the horizon resulted 36.35', nearly matching the forecast based on most of the equations found in literature. However, the Standard Deviation of the measures is 6.25', revealing thus their low precision. The error is not originated from the time measurements, but from the irregular behavior of the refraction at the horizon.
