Two categories of Reusable Launch Vehicle (RLV) initiatives in the U.S. are discussed - government and private industry. There are three major programs in the government's Integrated Space Transportation Plan (ISTP) - Shuttle Upgrades (1st Generation RLV). Space Launch Initiative (SLI, 2nd Generation) and Advanced Space Transportation Program (ASTP, 3rd and 4th Generation). The recent announcement by NASA on the selected system architectures is discussed, including concepts by Boeing, Lockheed Martin and a team of Northrop / Grumman / Orbital Sciences. In the private sector, there are several projects that have begun or are under way. RLV projects at 19 companies and organizations are discussed.
