We present our analysis of the Chandra (CXO) x-ray and Hubble (HST) optical observations of the XRF/GRBs 011030 and 020427. With two CXO (ACIS) observations of XRF 011030 (09 & 29 Nov 2001), we have been able to determine that the X-ray source fell between the two CXO epochs approximately as t-2 (using the time of the XRF/GRB as the zero-point), thus confirming the association of this source with the XRF/GRB.
We aligned the first, deeper CXO observation with the wide-field R-band images (1 & 3 Nov) from the WIYN telescope, and refine the CXO error circle. From HST (STIS) images, we find that the ˜ 0.2 asec CXO error circle overlaps the somewhat bluer, eastern end of a small irregular galaxy. The galaxy is approximately 0.5 asec across, and has a total V magnitude of ˜ 26.2, or approximately V=25, after removal of the estimated foreground extinction. This is comparable to the peak of the distribution of XRF/GRB host magnitudes. The color of the galaxy (after foreground extinction removal) is quite blue (consistent with a power-law of ν -0.5), suggesting both a relatively young stellar population and that the galaxy has a redshift, z < 3. XRF/GRB 011030 thus appears to be similar to GRBs in its probable redshift and in its association with a faint, blue galaxy; this in turn suggests that XRFs are not a radically different class of object, but are very soft GRBs.
Similar analysis of HST and CXO observations of XRF/GRB 020427 are presented. We align these images using a wide-field image obtained by the Danish 1.5m telescope at La Silla and find that XRF/GRB 020427 appears to lie on a blue galaxy (with V magnitude of ˜ 24.7), which is consistent with observations of GRB hosts in general.
