An attempt is made to indicate where progress towards the improvement of the distance scale can be achieved by space astrometry, using both Lacroute's device and the large space telescope. Although very high spatial resolution will be attainable with the LST, to very faint magnitudes over fields of the order of 30 inch in diameter, it is by no means clear whether the hopes for accuracy of 0.0001 arc sec/a will be achieved in a reasonable time.
