To date trigonometric parallaxes of somewhat more than 7000 stars have been measured, but only for 5% of them are the distances known with probable errors of less than 10%. Parallax work proposed by Lacroute could allow the calibration of luminosity relations, and an accurate determination of the Hyades parallax (an important basic distance for estimating the absolute magnitudes of giants and supergiants). A number of faint star parallaxes would allow the investigation of both the white dwarf problems and the red dwarf population in the vicinity of the sun.
