The basic astrometry problems are reviewed to which the LST will offer major contributions: parallaxes, binary stars, stellar dimensions, and fundamental coordinate system. Two novel approaches to setting up the fundamental coordinate system are discussed: a system of precision gyroscopes, and an orthogonal axis telescope. The relative accuracy of positions over the whole sky should be in the order of + or - 0.001 arc sec of arc after several measurements. The Astrometric Multiplexing Area Scanner (AMAS) is discussed as a means of obtaining parallax measurements. This instrument, in its prototype stage, is measuring relative stellar positions to + or - 2 micron (m.e.). The theoretical limit is in the submicron range.
