Powerful X-ray sources observed over the past few years are linked to a certain phase of evolution of orbiting double stars. Periodic eclipses of the sources accord with this model. Radial-velocity data imply that the sources are black holes (extremely dense dwarf stars) rather than neutron stars. A close binary system would become an X-ray source during the brief period between the termination of hydrogen burning in the core of the companion star and the moment when the envelope of the star has expanded to its Roche lobe (i.e., when the secondary star becomes a blue supergiant). The enormous energy production would result from matter falling in the extremely strong gravitational field of the black hole.
