The paper `Shells and isophotal distortions in elliptical galaxies' was published in Mon. Not. A. astr. Soc. (1992)254, 723-728. The orientation given in Plate 4 is incorrect. To obtain the correct orientation north (N) should be labelled south (S). East (E) should remain unchanged. The orientations in Plates 1 -3 are correct as given. This correction does not affect the conclusions of the paper.
