The astrophysical theory of electron-positron pair production in photon-photon interactions is reviewed on an introductory level. The basic properties of the physical process are briefly presented. The effects pair production introduces in thermal and nonthermal radiation models as well as in more realistic accretion scenarios are discussed using simple theoretical arguments. The implications of a range of observational characteristics for the various radiation models are given.
