A descriptive survey is given of several subjects of astronomical UV observations conducted from orbiting observatories. Early UV observations are reviewed, and the interstellar dust is discussed on the basis of interstellar extinction curves, the nature and origin of dust grains, the scattering of light by grains, and the interstellar radiation density. The interstellar gas is described with emphasis on atomic and molecular hydrogen, the origin of interstellar deuterium, and neutral as well as ionized atoms relevant to the cloud and intercloud regions of the interstellar gas. A program is outlined which aims at studying the interstellar magnesium abundance and electron density in different regions of the sky with the aid of balloon-borne platforms.
