A study is made of the motion of a particle in the symmetry plane of a potential, assuming that the vertical-oscillation energy is small. The orbits are assumed two-dimensional in the first approximation, and the solution to the two-dimensional problem is substituted in the equation for vertical motions. The problem then becomes analogous to the problem of the oscillations of a variable-length pendulum. The analysis makes it possible to judge the stability of two-dimensional motions and to compute specific three-dimensional orbits.
