A large-scale survey of the C-12 O emission around the classical nova GK Per (Nova Persei 1901) is presented. Although the elongated dust emission detected by IRAS around this cataclysmic variable would seem to be stellar in origin, a comparison of the far-infrared and C-12O emission suggests that some of the matter is contained in normal, interstellar 'cirrus' clouds. This result casts doubt upon a previous model for the region which is based upon the assumption that the material was cast off by GK Per or its progenitor. Even if there is an evolutionary connection between the circumstellar matter and the nova, it may be impossible to measure the amount of mass lost.
