An improved statistical theory for the third-order linear absorption of electromagnetic radiation propagating through a molecular gas is presented and applied to water vapor. Numerical calculations have been made of the contributions of third-order linear absorption to the water vapor continuum in the IR (750-1200/cm) and in the millimeter wave (30-300 GHz) regions. The results are compared with the available experimental data and are found to show semiquantitative agreement.
