Highly complex instruments, such as SIMURIS (Solar Interferomertric Mission for Ultrahigh Resolution Imaging and Spectroscopy), with many optical surfaces are particularly vulnerable to molecular contamination from outgassing of materials used in their construction. Theoretical predictions of optical performance based on outgas data can be unsatisfactory owing to the difficulty of simulating the precise conditions under which contamination occurs and the problem of modeling the particular contaminant composition and distribution. A study program whose aim was to identify typical contaminants found in space instrumentation, to understand and characterize their properties, and to investigate the optical effects of such contaminants produced from material outgassing under high vacuum conditions, is described.
