With the advent of the new observatories, it is becoming more evident that the solar flare is a more global phenomenon than previously thought. It is only the high temperature/high density manifestations that are confined to a small part of an active region. The overall question of the energy buildup, transport, and release is examined from a global perspective. The case of transporting the flare energy via energetic charged particles is discussed. Out of the two possibilities, protons or electrons, it is found that the protons give the more satisfactory account for the observations.
