The time delay in VLBI observations of radio sources near the sun caused by the solar corona is calculated by means of two methods to compare the results. The deflection method is employed in which the corresponding variation of the apparent direction of the radio source is used to assess the total time delay. This method is compared to the direct method in which the solar-corona time delay in the VLBI is computed by means of the difference between delays in the solar corona as measured at two locations. The corona electron-density model by Muhleman (1970) is employed, and the influence of the solar corona can reach 94 solar radii for 2.3 GHz and 31 solar radii for 8.4 GHz. The VLBI corona time delay computed by the direct method is found to be less ambiguous than that computed with the deflection method, and the difference between the two methods can reach 0.5 cm. The direct method is also useful for computing similar effects for other high-frequency radio observations.
