Approaches to the study of the planar n-body problem with finite point masses and the planar three-body problem are considered. An averaging procedure is introduced which allows the harmonic mean separation and rms escape velocity to be established for n-body systems, and the application of the procedure is examined for the case of three bodies. It is then shown that a more detailed knowledge of individual motions in the three-body problem may be obtained by the formulation of the problem in terms of the apex of the system, defined as the point of least average separation from the three bodies.
