Attention is given to the possibility that mergers of pure disk systems concentrate amounts of material and generate dissipative collapses sufficient to result in elliptical systems. Observational evidence from IRAS galaxies with IR luminosities of more than 10 exp 12 solar luminosity is reviewed. Specific treatment is given to the spectral energy distribution of Arp 220 when it is extrapolated into the UV. Because giant ellipticals are metal-rich it is assumed that they form from gases as enriched as those in IRAS merger progenitors. The spectral energy distribution of Arp 220 demonstrates the feasibility of detecting dust-shrouded protoellipticals in K- and V-band surveys. The present investigation suggests that ellipticals formed at high redshifts of more than 10 and that most galaxy formation can occur in events that are neither peculiar nor prominent.
