This paper presents a family of explicit, time-dependent magnetohydrodynamic solutions describing gravitating, magnetized, gamma = 4/3 polytropes in the shape of a spheroid undergoing self-similar expansion or contraction in vacuum. Included in this family are the solutions for a gravitating, magnetized sphere, which are mathematically akin to Prendergast's (1956) equilibrium solutions for a static magnetic star. The solutions presented here are of basic physical interest and may be useful for the testing of multidimensional, numerical magnetohydrodynamic codes which include self-gravity as an important effect.
