The spectroscopic properties of cool carbon stars are examined, based on a recently-proposed effective temperature scale (Tsuji, 1981). Various photometric indices of cool carbon stars are found to be well correlated with the new effective temperatures. Color index-effective temperature calibrations for carbon stars are different from those for K-M giant stars. Based on the fact that the intrinsic (R-I)0 color is nearly the same for N-irregular variables, in spite of a considerable spread in effective temperature, the interstellar reddening of carbon stars is estimated. An observational HR diagram of red giant stars, including carbon and K-M stars, is obtained on the basis of the color index-effective temperature calibrations and the best estimations of luminosity. It is shown that carbon stars and M giant stars are sharply divided in the HR diagram by a nearly vertical line at an effective temperature of 3200 K, and that the carbon stars occupy the upper right region of M giant stars.
