Pointlike extragalactic radio sources in distances larger than 1.5 billion light years do not have measurable proper motions and are therefore ideal objects for the realisation of geometrical reference systems for both astrometry and geodesy. Measurements using the Very Long Baseline Interferometry deliver positions at the sky better than ±1 milliarcsecond and on the earth better than ±3 cm. The optical positions of 100000 stars measured by the astrometry-satellite Hipparcos are equally precise at the mean epoch of measurement but lose precision due to stellar proper motions with increasing time. Moreover, there exists the possibility that their proper motions are partially of orbital origin within an unresolved double star.
