A study is presented of Comet Kohoutek 1973 XII photographs taken in the period January 19, 1974 0 UT to January 21, 3 UT by several observatories and assembled in a unified format. A large-scale tail disturbance observed in this period coincides with the passage of a high-speed solar wind stream and an interplanetary sector boundary, which is described as follows: (1) superimposed on a regular outward motion of tail condensations of a speed lower than about 100 km/sec, a kink moves down the tail with nearly solar wind velocity; (2) from the shape of the kink, the direction of the solar wind adjacent to the tail is deduced; and (3) during the large-scale disturbance, the overall plasma density seems to be enhanced. While a tail disconnection does not occur, it is proposed that the tail disconnection observed in more dramatic events is caused by the differential acceleration mechanism in combination with changes in the ion source which are perhaps due to enhanced charge exchange of cometary neutrals in the compression region ahead of the high speed stream.
