The observations and ideas that most of us feel are critical to our present understanding of AGNs are the outcome of winnowing processes operating on a much larger initial supply. Some of those processes are described, together with a few incidents whose importance has only gradually become clear. Other items touched upon include the life of Carl Seyfert, the state of the astronomical world in 1960, and citation histories of some key papers.
