Results are reported of an observational study of FUV spectra of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 1068 obtained with the Hopkins Ultraviolet Telescope during the flight of Astro-1 aboard Columbia in December 1990. Strong emission lines of C III 977, N III 991, Ly-beta, O VI 1032, 1038, and He II 1085 were revealed. Longward of Ly-alpha the spectrum is similar to previous observations obtained with the IUE. A flat blue continuum is observed down to the Lyman limit imposed by interstellar absorption in the Milky Way. Line ratios of semiforbidden C III 1909 to 977 A and semiforbidden N III 1750 to 991 A imply temperatures exceeding 25,500 and 61,000 K, respectively. Since these temperatures are much higher than those typically encountered in photoionized gas, it is suggested that shock heating should be reconsidered as an additional source of emission lines in the nucleus of NGC 1068.
