The bearing of related aspects of lead isotope systematics on the problem of planetary evolution is discussed. Stress is put on: (1) the point of isometry at which Pb-Pb isochrons intersect, which describes the present-day Pb composition of their common source; (2) dispersive isochronism, with respect to which it is suggested that the dispersion trajectories of the isotopic data of cognate closed systems (such as undisturbed rock and its minerals) must all meet at a point of convergence that represents a true end point common to the systems. Experimental evidence for this method's feasibility is provided; and (3) the congruency of galenas, which makes possible the construction of a hypothetical 'source profile' showing a spectrum of Pb compositions for sources of different ages, each of which could have produced a given galena. Old, conformable galenas yield an intersection point corresponding to a common source that is 4.45 billion years old.
