3C 273 was observed by ROSAT on two occasions during 1990: a pointed observation was performed during the calibration phase in June 1990 and a scanning observation occurred during the all sky survey in December 1990. High quality spectra have been taken in the 0.1-2.4 keV energy range. The spectra from both observations are significantly steeper than those generally found in the 2-20 keV range, with no absorption in excess of that expected from the galactic column density. This establishes a clear 'soft excess', which is found to vary significantly over the half a year time interval between the two observations. A particular clear case for the soft component can be made for the December 1990 observation, when it was quite strong and for which the ROSAT spectrum can be compared with the 2-20 keV spectrum measured simultaneously by Ginga.
