A previously derived power law for the angular momentum loss (AML) of rapidly rotating tidally coupled binary components is used to determine the time scales of binary evolution involving AML. The AML of binary components with spin periods of less than 4 d is shown to be at least 10 times greater than that expected from the extrapolation of the rules that can be found for slow rotators, a result which explains the relatively short approach time (7.5 x 10 to the 8th yr) obtained for the components of tidally coupled late-type binaries. This result is also consistent with the relatively short duration of the contact phase of W UMa binaries (shorter than 1.5 x 10 to the 8th yr) and the rapid spin-down of very young late type MS stars.
