The recent availability of a complete set of data on galaxy counts over a wide range of apparent magnitudes reveals a peculiar numerical coincidence and suggests a new test for the gravitational lens origin of quasars: the observed bright quasar number-magnitude relation dlog N(OSO)/dm = 0.9 results from simple consideration of statistical gravitational lensing of unresolved Seyfert nuclei by galaxies and clusters of galaxies, combined with the observed galaxy number-magnitude relation and estimates of the K-correction for Seyferts. This simple result is independent of lens model adjustable parameters, which directly affect only the absolute number of QSOs. If the fraction of QSOs which are lens events is high, then the estimated number of lens QSOs to 18th magnitude is in rough agreement with the total observed number to that magnitude only if we take unreasonably large galaxy masses.
