An experimental technique is described which may be used to measure radiative lifetimes of molecular ions as short as 60 nsec and as long as about 10 microsec. The use of mass selection allows the unambiguous assignment of fluorescence signal to a particular ion, and it is shown that the use of selected laser excitation of specific states avoids the problem of population cascading. Rapid spatial dissipation of ions due to electrostatic repulsion is avoided by means of an ion trap, within which densities of selected ions greater than 1,000,000/cu cm can be maintained for periods of many milliseconds. The technique is used in careful measurements of the A 1Pi(nu prime equals zero) radiative lifetime for both CH(+) and CD(+). The results agree with those of Yoshimine (1973).
