Low and medium resolution spectra in the 3-4 microns region were obtained of 18 Herbig Ae/Be stars in a search for organic features from the dust around young stars. The 3.29 microns emission feature from aromatic hydrocarbons was detected in two new objects, Lk Hα 25 and XY Per, and, with less certainty, in one other, HD 245185. About 16 \ 3.29 microns features. Among the stars with the feature, feature-to-continuum contrast varies over a wide range; emission equivalent widths vary by a factor ~ 20. There is less variation (a factor ~ 2) in the ratio of emission feature flux to the dereddened stellar visible flux. A possible explanation is that the abundances of 3.29 microns emitters are roughly comparable around these stars but that features are veiled by different infrared continuum levels. Firm upper limits on the relative feature flux were obtained for some objects, however, suggesting real variations in the abundance and/or optical depth of aromatic hydrocarbons around young stars.
