As part of a program to search for dust clouds in spheroidal stellar systems, the Kitt Peak National Observatory video camera has been used to image the central regions of Local Group galaxies M31, M32, NGC 185, and NGC 205. The NGC 185 and M31 systems have different types of clouds, and correspondingly different levels of star-forming activity. While the low-contrast and optically thin M31 clouds probably contain mostly atomic gas and are not associated with massive star formation, NGC 185 has both dense, optically thick clouds, perhaps analogous to galactic molecular clouds, and young luminous blue stars. Expected stellar mass loss and star formation rate comparisons suggest an equilibrium state for NGC 185, with young stars acting as a sink for recycled gas. The fact that this is not the case in the M31 bulge illustrates the unresolved problem of interstellar matter equilibrium mass in spheroidal stellar systems.
