Lynden-Bell and Wood's (1968) stability discussion of the classical isothermal gas sphere is extended to isothermal structures which obey a realistic stellar equation of state. The analysis offers a theoretical framework for the interpretation of a series of numerical experiments on stellar evolution which are performed by suppressing the nuclear energy generation. A gravo-thermal catastrophe appears in the later evolutionary stages when the mass of the model exceeds the Chandrasekhar limit, and it is confirmed that the standard red giant phase cannot be interpreted by a mechanism such as the one proposed by Lynden-Bell and Wood.
