We observed rapid variations in the nova--like cataclysmic variable AE Aquarii for 1.7 hours with 4.3 second time resolution using a 30 channel (lambda 3200--10500 Angstroms) spectrophotometer on the Hale 5m telescope. The 16.5 and 33 second oscillations show a featureless blue spectrum that can be represented by f_ν ~ nu (-0.9) , or a blackbody with temperature T ~ 2times 10(4) K and area A ~ 10(18) cm(2) (d/100pc)(2) , much smaller than the accretion disk. The spectrum of a flare indicates optically -- thin gas with T ~ 1.5 times 10(4) K.
